Britain, Tehran and a German sportswear company all spent today announcing what they have decided about Israel, and not one of them has to make the decision hold. That is why they got there so fast. Israelis spent the same day standing in front of people who could actually ask them something — a party tribunal, an education correspondent, a family in Queens that still wants a name.

What separates the pressure on Israel today from Israel's own day is whether anybody has to go and carry out what was decided. Abroad, almost nobody does. In Israel, every decision landed on a man who then had to find people — names for a slate, teachers for a classroom, soldiers to hold a ridge through the chag.
